What to Do When You’re a Chronic Multitasker
No, the answer isn’t “outsource your tasks”
Let me set the scene for you. It’s 6:30 am. I get dressed in my workout gear and pop on a podcast to listen to whilst training. Beside my workout bench are a notepad and pen to jot down any interesting ideas that arise during the podcast. By the end of my workout, I have one book recommendation, a new person to Google and three blog post ideas.
Whilst reading with my breakfast, I think up two more blog post ideas, a video idea and, lo-behold, another book recommendation. Then, as I’m researching for my work, I think up an idea for a new paragraph for the chapter I’m working on (or make that three new paragraphs, including a deviating thought that pulled into question my entire argument (must research that later)).
It’s not even 11 am, but midway through my research of the deviating thought, a client phones me. They have a mini-project they need me to complete by the end of the day, which takes me down a whole other direction of work for the next few hours and inspires yet another blog post idea — the one you’re reading right now.
I am a chronic multitasker, primarily because I struggle to turn off my brain. Everything I consume inspires a new thought which results in me falling down a network of rabbit holes that usually…
